Reading layouts for every screen

November 2026
Reading mode learns your screens, and a round of small fixes lands with it.
  • A reading layout per screen. Reading settings now have a Screen group with Desktop, Portrait and Landscape. All three share one set of choices until you unlink one, which lets that screen keep its own. Portrait reads one page by default. Choose Two to bring back the stacked picture above the text.
  • The book opens closed on chapter one. Opening a story at its first chapter shows the closed book with the story's cover. Open the book and the cover swings to the left. A story without a cover picture gets a typeset cover with its title. The Cover button beside the book closes it again.
  • Create a cover. A story with no cover picture offers Create a cover on the closed book, the same way chapters offer Create a picture. Only the story's owner and admins see it.
  • Moving scene backdrops. Reading settings have a new Moving scene mode after Picture. It plays a slow looping scene, such as rain on a window or a fireplace, softly behind the book. Picture now lists only still pictures, and a collection can mix both. Phones keep the plain dim. Reduced motion and Save-Data show a still.
  • A starry night by default. New readers start with a night-sky picture behind the book. Collections have Add all, and backdrops made by AI carry an AI label.
  • A spinner while a picture is made. Create a picture shows a spinner in its place until the picture arrives, so you can see it is working and cannot press it twice.
  • Picture style guidance. Each picture style setting now says in one line what it changes.
  • Suggest settings for this chapter. One button reads your story setup and the chapter and fills in picture style tags, focus and shape for you. You can change them before anything is drawn. It costs 0.125 credits.
  • Which style is in use. The first time you open a story in reading mode, a quiet note on the left page tells you which picture style it will use, with a link to change it.
  • Clearer phone note. The phone callout in reading settings now only talks about what a phone can change.
  • Leaving a chapter that is still being written asks first. If you try to leave while the text is still coming in, you get a question before the chapter is lost.
  • The fan-fiction wizard respects the character budget. It only ticks the brief characters that fit, so it no longer starts over budget. The rest stay one click away.
  • Leave for later. A saved word in review can now be set aside without grading it.
  • Background sound loads the story once. Sound no longer fetches the same story a second time.
  • Playlist menus close each other. Opening one playlist menu closes any other that was open.
  • Parchment reads in EB Garamond. The Parchment preset now uses a Garamond-style book face.
  • AI themes style the reading book. A theme made by the AI now sets the paper, ink and accent of the reading book too.
  • Tooltips look and behave the same everywhere. Hover hints across the app now use one tooltip instead of the browser's own.
  • Security updates. The libraries that handle images are updated to their latest patched versions.
