Book and Modern reading

November 2026
Reading mode now has two layouts to choose from, and its settings start simple.
  • Book. On a desktop or a landscape screen the book now reads like a real one. The chapter flows across the pages, a turn shows the back of the page you just turned, and the picture sits on its own page with paper around it. Turn with the page buttons, a click on the right or left of the page, a swipe, the page keys or by dragging the page. Go to page and Jump to the end take you anywhere in the chapter. Book is the default for new readers.
  • Modern. Modern scrolls the chapter freely, with no pages. A Jump to the end button takes you to the choices, and the next chapter fades in. Switch between Book and Modern under Layout in Reading settings. Phones in portrait read Modern.
  • Force desktop on a landscape phone. A phone held sideways can opt in to the full desktop book. A note explains that it may be small.
  • Simple settings first. Reading settings now open on five things: Mood, Picture style, Layout, Text size and the screen you are on. All settings opens everything else.
  • Three moods. Night sky, Cozy room and Clean each set the backdrop, the paper and the music together. Phones take the paper and the music without the backdrop.
  • Music when you read. The first time you open a book, it asks once whether to play music while you read. Yes starts the mood's music on every later open, No never does. Change it any time in All settings.
  • Painted starter styles. Pictures now start from eight painted looks, such as Storybook watercolour, Ink and wash or Painted space art, each with an example. Pick one with a tap, or switch to Custom for the full controls. The chapter image window, covers and a story's style lock all use them. Styles you already saved stay as they were.
  • Suggest settings picks a style. Suggest settings for this chapter now answers with one of the starter styles plus focus and shape. It still costs 0.125 credits.
  • A story's style lock shows in the book. When a story locks its picture style, reading settings show that style instead of offering a free pick. The story's owner gets a link to change the lock.
  • How many chapters follow a choice. An optional small count under each written choice shows how many chapters can be read down that path and how far the longest one goes. Turn it on in All settings.
  • Room for more choices. Choices sit in two columns, and an odd last one is centred below the others, so an extra choice you add still looks tidy.
  • A calmer cover. The closed book keeps its size when it opens, also without a picture. The title plate sits a third of the way down, the author line stays on small screens and Create a cover is a small secondary button.
